For any cinephile, or even a casual cinema goer, the Imax experience is a must. 47 feet of screen with your favourite films splashed across them -- what's not to love?
For an even more intense experience, as if aliens with screen hands the size of your whole body weren't enough, Imax on 3D is even more trippy. 3D in general is a great experience, and with an Imax screen, it's such a complete viewing delight for all the senses.
The Imax at Milennium Point can be attended either as part of the entire ThinkTank experience, or as a stand-alone film. They don't play every film that comes out, just select ones (usually the highest grossing). Then they also show films that have been made specifically to be viewed in 3D, such as the dinosaurs of the deep and the ocean panaroma experience.
When we went, we saw the ocean film, which was 43 minutes in length, and 3D. I always have a slight problem with 3D, in that it takes awhile for my eyes to relax enough to actually SEE the 3D, instead of just straining my eyes.
But once my eyes relaxed, the film was splendiferous! The world's oceans and all their brilliant colours and wildlife swam in front of our eyes in stunning Imax size, brilliant colour, and 3D, to top it all off!
At one point, a fish "swam" by our head, and my stepson reached out reflexively to stroke it, only to realize what he was doing and laugh at himself. Plenty of other children were doing the same. I know the adults wanted to, but held themselves back!
A great night out for dates wanting to do a different take on the dinner and a movie date, or for families seeing the latest Disney fare.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (djfras…)Birmingham, United Kingdom96281022 Sept 2008
I went here for the 1st time recently to watch the U23D movie, and I wasn`t dissapointed.
It is a huge screen which puts you right in the action, and has increadible realistic surround sound.
The 3D glasses provided with the 3D films are big enough to sit over your own glasses and the effects are superb.
Will definately go again to see some of the other 3D films such as Sea Monsters.
A great way to start a good night out in Birmingham!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Sheena…)Birmingham, United Kingdom651381118 Nov 2008
Seen Batman & Harry Potter here, and each cost under a tenner for students as they do a student discount. The screen is so immensely huge, that it really is quite awesome!
The staff are nice and helpful, and the waiting area is lovely for a drink, snack etc. Prices on snacks are not bad at all, the only drawback about the imax is that they don't sell fresh popcorn! Otherwise its amazing! A must! But always be earlyHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Johnathan S.Birmingham, United Kingdom165216 Nov 2008First to Review
Can be expensive, especially the 'feature length' films which can be £8+!
Saying this, definitely an experience in itself and well worth the money for those epic-adventure films that only this screen truly lets you get absorbed into it!
I'm glad that this IMAX seems to be doing relatively well nowadays, it did close for a some time due to financial difficulties a while back and therefore needs all the support and visitors it can get! If you haven't seen an IMAX 3D film before, it is well worth a visit a unique experience not to be missed!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (spider…)Derby, United Kingdom34919 Nov 2008
If you've never been to an Imax cinema before, it can be an overwhelming experience, especially if the film is also in 3D! I went for the first time earlier this year to see Beowulf 3D, and I was really impressed. The Imax screen truly is huge, it really takes some getting used to - at first it felt like it was almost too big to see the whole picture in one go! The size of the screen combined with the excellent quality surround sound and the 3D effects means you become totally immersed in the movie.
An awesome experience, I'll be going again as soon as I can.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Manche…)Manchester, United Kingdom837911313 Jan 2009
I took our two kids (then aged 3 and 5) to this place last year to see a kids' film.
The whole trip worked out very well actually. There was plenty of car parking, and when we got inside the building certainly had a 'wow' factor. We bought our tickets and waited downstairs, where helpfully there were some Jenga-type games around to keep the kids amused before the film started.
The screen itself was impressive and the kids managed to keep their glasses on throughout the film. However, that was largely because neither of them managed to stay awake! So in the end I was left to enjoy the show by myself.
The only significant drawback, really, was the cost. But apart from that, it was a good way of occupying an afternoon.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (Shell…)Birmingham, United Kingdom22013 Jan 2009
I've never been to an imax cinema before so wasn't sure what to expect!
We decided to go on the first opening weekend of the dark knight having read good reviews and because it was one of the first films to have scenes shot specifically for imax cinemas.
As we knew it would be busy we decided to book online and then collected them from the box office during the day using a reference number (very easy and hassle free, you can get them sent to you as well i think). Then all we had to do was get there in the evening.
There is plenty of parking, bear in mind that it's not free though. It uses a token system so you'll have to queue up for the machine afterwards to pay which is a bit of a pain when there are loads of people waiting to leave.
The imax place is huge but luckily it's pretty obvious where you have to go and the people who work there are extremely friendly. There is a double set of stairs leading up into a slanted ceiling which is where you enter the cinema. Everyone sits down around the bottom of the stairs and waits (there are toilets, a bar, food stalls etc). In our case a big queue formed about 45 minutes before the film started although for normal films i don't think it is that bad.
I'd heard that the best place to sit was at the top in the middle so that was our aim. The gates were opened and everyone pretty much ran to get their seats. The top row had groups of two comfy seats together which i assumed were for disabled/preminum members? We didn't want to risk sitting in them and getting moved (and having to sit right at the front!) so instead we picked the main row below and sat in the centre. Even though i knew the imax screens were big i still wasn't prepared at how big the screen was and was glad we were at the back!
The seats were comfortable although there wasn't much leg room and it got really hot in there. Although it was more pricey than a normal cinema ticket it was so worth it for the imax scenes of the dark knight which was mainly the overhead building shots. It felt like you were actually in the air which was pretty scary as i'm scared of heights.
The non imax parts of the film were good and the surround sound was excellent. I think i would definately go back there again if there was a film that I wanted to see and i'm considering going for one of the nature films that they often show there or maybe a 3d film!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (blueno…)Birmingham, United Kingdom02427 Nov 2008
The IMAX is an amazing cinematic experience. The screen is enormous and it fills all of your direct and peripheral vision. It is a different and better experience to a bog standard normal cinema.
The lay out is good and wherever you sit you feel that you are in the middle of everything. It is hard to describe in words, you really have to see it for yourself to apprecoate the technology.
I saw The Dark Knight here and it is much better than a normal cinema, you feel that you are right in the thick of the action. The film had specific sections for the IMAX format and they were absolutely out of this world. A bit more expensive than your local Odeon but well worth it in my opinion.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Qype User (sarah1…)Solihull, United Kingdom2830217 Jan 2009Updated review
I have visited here a few times, the first I was lucky enough to win 2 tickets from BRMB and went to see a Dinosaur film. More recently watched Harry Potter and Polar Express. It is more expensive than a standard cinema but as a treat it is worth it. Screen is massive and seating is comfortable
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 021 Sept 2008Previous reviewLast went to see Harry Potter here think it was 2 years ago now. Did plan to see the Polar Express around Christmas last year as well, but never got round to it so will see if I can get to go this year.
Massive does not even begin to describe the size of the screen! The seats are comfortable and although whenever I have been it has been busy, it has never had people pushing. The price for HP was not that much more expensive than a normal cinema and for the experience of seeing it 3d it was definitely worth the extra few pounds. - Qype User (andika…)London, United Kingdom954215 Nov 2008
Very impressed with this cinema which is in the huge Millennium Point complex. Easy to get to by car with lots of parking available. We went to see Batman: The Dark Knight and as soon as the movie started playing I just did not know where to look with the screen being so big I felt like asking my friend to tell me what is going on, on his part of the screen. However, you get used to it and it makes the movie much more enjoyable. It is not worth the extra money on the tickets for most movies but for action packed movies where you really want to see everything it is perfect. I was left with an open mouth in scenes where there is a panoramic view of the city. I recommend you get there early to get a good seat near the middle or further back.
