Matzbach

We're staying in a place close to here for a month and have eaten here several times.

The food has been consistently good and we've received great service. We're fans of their schnitzel Wednesday and really like their spaetzle too.

The people watching (in the summer while we've been here) is fantastic. You occasionally have to deal with beggars or musicians coming through the place (like much of Kreuzberg), but overall we really like this restaurant.

I can't give it a 5-star for all of their food, although a few of our meals have been close. But if you add in the ambience and relaxed, non-touristy feel- we're big fans.

Ich bin schon oft am Matzbach vorbeigelaufen und es sah ganz nett aus, man sitzt gemütlich.
Das war dann aber leider auch schon alles. Eine schöne Fassade.
Als mein Mann 2 Gerichte bestellte (weil er sich nicht entscheiden konnte und dann den Rest mitnehmen wollte), fragte der Kellner, ob noch jemand käme und als wir verneinten verzog er pikiert das Gesicht.
Ich bestellte Dinkelmaultaschen in Brühe, die sahen gut aus, schmeckten aber wie nix mit eingeschlafenen Füßen. Labbrig, ungewürzt und halbwarm. Außerdem hatte ich einen Salat, von dem ich mir auch mehr vesrprochen hatte.
Mein Mann aß Schnitzel mit Kartoffelgratin und Spätzle. Die Spätzle waren okay, das Kartoffelgratin bestand aus Kartoffeln, Sahne und Rosmarin und schmeckte hauptsächlich nach Sahne.
Alles nicht liebevoll gekocht und angerichtet und der Kellner benahm sich ungeheuer arrogant und abwertend uns gegenüber.
Hübsches Ambiente, nette Einrichtung, aber das, worauf es beim Restaurantbesuch ankommt (Essen, Service): SCHRECKLICH.

Decided to try it because it was close and it made a top list on Thrillist website. Don't. The schnitzel was salty and tough and the server was ridiculously impatient. Wasted a meal on our four-day trip. Boo. Should've been alerted when they had the musician guy hitting people up for change - hello tourist site!
