Caro’s 5-star review:
In the true spirit of a Mexican Super Market this place has it all. A restaurant (not to be confused with the one further down the strip, this is just a counter with a couple of seats), the best Panaderia ever, mexican style carniceria, yummy tamales, a jewelery/fragrance vendor, and a check cashing/money gram/ pharmacy, all well stocked with your favorite Mexican items.
I grew up with this store. I member back when they were across the street from the Brenden Theatres in what is now Pizza Man Pizza. Now they are all grown up located in the old Smart and Final. I know they are starting to show their age a little but hey its what's on the inside that counts. And what is on the inside you ask? Well, only my favorite Chorizo Platter and Breakfast Burrito, super fresh fruit smoothies, seasoned roasted chicken, trays full of self serve daily made tamales, a freezer bin full of Bay Point's own Guanatos popsicles, the best Mexican candy section I have seen (located at customer service), an extensive selection of Mexican Rx products including arnica, crema de la campana, and herbal teas, plus my favorite panaderia ever.
Now, lets talk for a moment about their pan dulce...okay, now that I am done drooling I can tell you about how amazing their hot bolillos and panes dulces are baked every morning and evening. If you plan your trip you can get them all hot and fresh out of the oven. In fact my Mom and I love to go buy bread early in the morning and walk over to Starbucks grab some coffee and sit there and eat it while it is still hot.
Some of my favorites are the tortuga, concha, empanadas de crema, elotitos and most of all the shortbread pink cookie! I live for these. What I love most about all of their pan is that it is NOT super greasy. Their conchas are not dense and oily (like the ones at mi Pueblo), they do not seep through the bag. The concha breads are light and puffy. They take me back to my fond memories of Tijuana as a kid.
Okay, I gotta go kill my diet over some pan dulce, later. XOXO
